A British woman has lost her life after penetrating the wreck of the Zenobia, off Larnaca in Cyprus. The diver, named as Catherine Vicar, was one of a group of holidaying divers who were undertaking their third dive on the wreck.
The alarm was raised when the group surfaced to realise that Vicar had not ascended.
Staff from the dive centre involved descended to the wreck and found Vicar unconscious in the large engine-room.
She was reported to have removed her breathing equipment, which had empty cylinders.Vicar was raised, taken ashore and transferred to Larnaca General Hospital, where it was confirmed that she had died.
The Zenobia is a popular dive, sitting in 42m of water but rising to just 15m of the surface at its highest point.
The roll-on roll-off ferry sank with a complement of lorries and cars after capsizing in 1980, without loss of life.
Four divers have lost their lives on the wreck, the last fatality having occurred in 2003 when another Briton, 31-year-old Dean Hearne, died also in the engine-room.
