Nusa Penida, south-east of Bali, was designated a Marine Conservation Area by the Minister for Marine and Fisheries, Fadel Muhamad together with the District Head, Bupati of Klungkung, I Wayan Candra, at a ceremony witnessed by Bali Governor, I Made Pastika on Sunday 21 November.Covering an extensive area of 20,057 hectares, Nusa Penida has a rich marine biodiversity containing 296 coral species and 576 fish species, according to marine experts Dr. Emre Turak and Gerry Allen. While, following a recent survey undertaken by TNC (The Nature Conservancy) Indonesia Marine Program, the Nusa Penida Conservation Area possesses 1,419 hectares of coral reefs, and 230 hectares mangrove forests with 13 species of mangroves.
Located at the south-eastern corner of Bali, and is the most south westerly corner of the Coral Triangle, Nusa Penida consists of 3 islands, they are Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, and are easily reached within one hour from Benoa harbour.
District Head, I Wayan Candra, noted that here are found the unique and rare Mola-mola or sunfish, which regularly appear every July through September, and together with manta rays are magnetic draws for international divers. Here also often appear migrating whales and dolphins,
The Nusa Penida Marine Conservation Park forms part of Indonesia’s action plan in the Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI), which was declared jointly by countries in the Coral Triangle comprising the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Timor Leste, Papua New Guinea to the Solomon Islands. On its part Indonesia has pledged to protect marine and coastal ecosystems to cover 20 million hectares by 2020, said Minister Fadel Muhamad.
